Williams Named University President
Dean Walter Williams was the Board of Curators' unanimous choice to lead the University through the Great Depression. Williams had declined the presidency in 1921, but knowing that political and economic circumstances had changed, he accepted the responsibility. Williams officially retained his title as dean of the School of Journalism.
As president, Walter Williams hosted a variety of guests, including (clockwise from top left) governors of both states and their guests during a Missouri-Nebraska football game in 1931; French Ambassador Paul Claudel in 1932; Spanish Ambassador Juan Francisco de Cardenas in 1933; Joseph Pulitzer Jr. (far right) with others in 1932; and a group of Japanese students in 1935. Williams also awarded his wife, Sara Lockwood Williams, BJ '13, her master's degree in 1931.
