African American Denied Admission
|
Lucile Bluford, a reporter and editor for the African-American newspaper the Kansas City Call, applied and qualified for admission to the journalism graduate program. Acting on "separate but equal" laws, however, the University denied her admission on the grounds that Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., offered facilities for black students. Bluford challenged the ruling several times but was never admitted. She was later awarded the Missouri Honor Medal in 1984 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Missouri in 1989.
