|
|
Winston Churchill was awarded the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism but was unable to attend the annual Journalism Week banquet. Other honorees included the NBC anchor pair Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. Brinkley remarked on the School's reputation, saying, "Before I came to Columbia today, I felt like an Arab who had never been to Mecca."
Winston Churchill (top left, with Harry S. Truman in 1945) sent his written acceptance of the Missouri Honor Medal (top right). Other recipients included (seated): Cowgill Blair, Cranston Williams and George L. Merrells (for Churchill). Standing: Dean Earl English; Chet Huntley, J. Russell Wiggins, Bernard Kilgore and James S. Copley, with President Elmer Ellis. (Bottom) David Brinkley signed autographs during his appearance at Journalism Week.
