James Atwater Named Dean

James (Jim) Atwater was appointed the School's seventh dean, replacing one-year appointee Elmer Lower. Previously, Atwater was a senior editor for Time magazine, as well as a writer for The Saturday Evening Post and Reader's Digest. A 1950 graduate of Yale, Atwater also served as a consultant for the Nixon Administration.

Jim Atwater served six years as dean of the School and oversaw many changes, such as computerization of the Columbia Missourian and the growth of the advertising department. He died in 1996 from cancer.
