Famous Journalist Left Estate to School
|
Mrs. O.O. McIntyre, widow of the famed Missouri-born New York syndicated columnist, bequeathed her $1.4 million estate to the Missouri School of Journalism. Mr. McIntyre, born in Plattsburg, Mo., was one of the most widely known New York columnists during the 1920s and 1930s for his column, "New York Day by Day." It was syndicated to 508 newspapers throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. The funds created the O.O. McIntyre Professorship, an annual award honoring a Missouri Journalism professor, and the McIntyre Fellowship, an annual award for aspiring student writers.
In honor of her husband (center left), Mrs. Maybelle McIntyre (top right, and, bottom, with J-School Dean Roy Fisher) helped establish the annual McIntyre journalism awards for Missouri Journalism students and professors.
