Emerging Technology Used for Production, News, Advertising

The Missourian installed a $250,000 computerized system that eliminated the need for designing and pasting up newspaper pages by hand. In 1985 the Missourian became the first daily newspaper in the world to produce its product using a local-area network. Additionally, a new lab equipped with 25 Macintosh Plus computers, five Imagewriters II and three Laserwriters allowed students to compose ads electronically.

Professors Phill Brooks and Brian Brooks (top) created a local-area network to produce the Missourian. Technology upgrades allowed students work on word processors in the newsroom (center), and advertising students learned in a high-tech lab (bottom).
