Advertising Evolved into Strategic Communication
Due to the recognition by advertising faculty and alumni that "advertising" was only one of many skill sets that graduates needed in the field, the department broadened its curriculum focus to "strategic communication" in 1999. Strategic communication students not only learned the basic principles of advertising, public relations, media research, sales and promotions, but they also learned how these disciplines are affected by strategic planning, globalization and technology.
Strategic communication students (left) learned the many skill sets necessary for 21st-century communications careers, in addition to the traditional advertising design (right).
