Disruptive technologies leader Todd Herman, the founder and chief creative officer of SpinSpotter, will discuss how software can surface the relative bias and inaccuracy of any news story at the Sept. 12 Technology Summit. You may feel uncomfortable with the notion but technologies like these may be important to the future of journalism. The Tech Summit, part of the centennial/dedication celebration, is an action-packed exhibition of the ideas, trends, tools, technologies and companies that are leading the way into 21st-century journalism.

Todd Herman, the founder and chief creative officer of SpinSpotter, is a recognized action-leader in disruptive advertising and media models that crossbreed traditional and new media. Prior to SpinSpotter he held a number of posts at Microsoft and MSNBC.com; most recently, he was general manager of global media strategy and monetization for Microsoft's MSN. Herman crafted edge-revenue models and company-level strategies for engagement with traditional media companies. Prior to that, he served as general manager of media experiences for MSN Entertainment at Microsoft. In 2003, Herman wrote the business plan for MSN Video, the predecessor to YouTube. As the ad industry evangelist for video, he inaugurated more than 100 traditional TV brands into Internet video, represented MSN in the TV upfronts and created the MSN Originals series. Herman also helped lead the negotiations that cemented the relationship between MSN and The Associated Press, upon which the AP built its groundbreaking video service. Herman, who began working in streaming media in 1996, has had numerous other successes in introducing major brands such as Microsoft, Sears, H&R Block and Folgers Coffee to digital platforms. Herman is a contributing writer to The Streaming Media Bible by Steve Mack (2002, Wiley & Sons). He has been a featured solo speaker at Ogilvy's Verge Summit, Ad:tech, the National Association of Broadcasters, Streaming Media East and West and Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Media Days.

Kim Garretson, BJ '73, is a general partner in Realist Ventures & Advisory Services. He advises venture capital firms, early-stage consumer digital media companies, retailers and media companies on disruptive innovation. Previously, Garretson was the liaison to the venture capital industry for Best Buy's Corporate Strategy & Innovation division. Prior to that, Garretson co-founded NOVO Media Group, which was the fourth-largest digital agency at its sale to Leo Burnett in 2001. Garretson also has been a partner in the upper Midwest's largest marketing and public relations agency. He began his career as a senior editor and technology columnist for Better Homes and Gardens.
Mike McKean Mike McKean

Mike McKean is the Futures Lab director at the Reynolds Journalism Institute and a professor at the Missouri School of Journalism, where he has taught for 22 years. McKean created the School's convergence journalism program and chaired the convergence journalism faculty from 2005-2008. He is a leader in teaching with technology at the local, national and international levels. Winner of the MU's Innovator Award, McKean is chairing the campus Information Technology Committee; coordinating partnerships with Apple, Inc., AT&T and Adobe Systems; and helping establish convergence curricula at Moscow State University in Russia and Shantou University in China. McKean also has chaired the radio-TV news faculty at Missouri, served as Web director at KOMU-TV and news director of KBIA-FM. Before joining the School of Journalism, he was managing editor of KTRH NewsRadio in Houston and assistant news director at the Missourinet in Jefferson City.
