Degree and Year: AgJ '57, MA '58 (CAFNR) Title: Semi-Retired Financial Services Consultant City and State: West Des Moines, Iowa What do you do? I am semi-retired in financial services. I spent 20 years writing and publishing before backing into financial services in 1980. After two years in the Army, I spent six-and-a-half years as an editor at Successful Farming published by Meredith Publishing Co. in Des Moines, Iowa. From 1967 to 1975, I was part owner of a specialized publishing and public relations firm. For five years I owned my own company, publishing estate planning materials which led to the career in financial services. I received Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant designations in the mid-1980s and am now a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table. Currently I work with donors who want to leverage their gifts to colleges and other nonprofit organizations or create a larger legacy for their family. How did you get your job? With help from the College of Agriculture and J-School placement folks. What is the best professional lesson you learned at the J-School? Accuracy first and always. What advice do you have for current students? Immerse yourself in extracurricular activities - as many as you can handle and still maintain your grades. It will prepare you for multitasking in the real world (of work). What is your favorite J-School memory? A surprise enactment with gunshots by a staged intruder in Frank Luther Mott's lecture one day. He used it to effectively prove that being on the scene of a news event can lead to many inaccurate reports. No doubt this would be prohibited today! Last thoughts? Working on the Columbia Missourian and College Farmer while in school was wonderful training for getting a job and being ready to go to work upon graduation.
