Degree and Year: BJ '76 (News-Editorial) Company: Telegraph Herald Company Web Site: http://www.thonline.com/ Title: Executive Editor City and State: Dubuque, Iowa
I am executive editor and editorial board chairman at the Telegraph Herald in Dubuque, Iowa, since 1986. The Telegraph Herald is a 30,000-circulation daily. I also consult with the editors of six weekly newspapers in our privately owned company. How did you get your job? While editor of The Ottumwa (Iowa) Courier, I responded to an ad in E&P. Best professional lesson learned at the J-School? The best lesson I learned was the value of hard work and an obsession for accuracy. What is your best advice to current students? For reporters, concentrate on hard news (too many students pursue features and opinion too soon). For copy editors, question everything. And check your spelling!
