Degree and Year: BJ '02 (Advertising) Company: The Heritage Foundation Company Web Site: http://www.heritage.org/ Title: Special Events Coordinator City and State: Washington, D.C.
My department plans donor events and special events with important government officials. I help coordinate all of the details to bring the events together - venue choice, catering, valet services, invitations, programs, speaker scheduling, etc. I have planned events with President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Secretary of Defense Don Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Attorney General John Ashcroft, Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, Steve Forbes, Sean Hannity and countless members of the U.S. Congress. How did you get your job? I applied for an event planning position I saw on Rollcall.com. The company's name was anonymous. I received a call the next day and was offered the opportunity to come out to D.C. to interview. I was offered the position the day after I interviewed, and I began my new position two weeks later. It all happened so fast - I had two weeks to finish my other job in Iowa, pack my belongings and move to Washington. What makes you good at your job? Meticulous attention to detail. In the event planning business, you have to really dot your i's and cross your t's. What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement? Seeing 900 people attend the event I helped to plan with President Bush and then seeing the media coverage our event received. All of my friends in Missouri and family in Iowa were able to see the President give his speech with the Heritage Foundation logo behind him - they were all able to catch a glimpse of what I do! What is your secret to success? Always do your best and never complain about the tasks assigned to you. When you start out in a new career, just expect to be the low man on the totem pole. You will only move up the ladder by proving you can handle the grunt work without complaining. Soon you will be given more and more responsibility.
