Name: Genie (Yu) Hamilton
Degree and Year: BJ '00 (Broadcast News)
Company: Abbott Laboratories
Company Web Site: http://www.abbott.com/
Title: Biologic Representative

What do you do?
I am a biologic representative for Abbott Laboratories. I consult with physicians on a daily basis regarding the biologic products I represent.

How did you get your job?
I was already with Abbott Laboratories as a pharmaceutical specialty account executive and was redeployed into this position. I got into the pharmaceutical industry because I was referred into it by a fellow Mizzou journalism graduate. The communication skills I learned at Mizzou were critical in getting the position.

What advice do you have for current students?
Get involved in an organization or club that you enjoy. The networking that you do as a student can become very important in your career as well. Also, the J-School is hard and some instructors may try to "weed out" people who aren't going to make it, but don't get discouraged. We aren't all the same, and if you don't fit the "mold," find someone else (a different instructor or mentor) who sees your differences as strengths. If you want something bad enough, you can do it! And if you find that what you thought you wanted isn't what you want after all...that's okay, too!

What is your favorite J-School memory?
My first live shot (for KOMU) was the most memorable experience I had in the J-School. The rush of being sent out the door to chase armed robbers and the craziness of getting the story and the interviews together before being the first to go live from the scene was quite an experience. It was so much easier after the first one. The journalism student I worked with on that story became one of my best friends to this day.

What has your journalism degree meant to you?
Even though I am not currently working as a journalist, I attribute my success in my career to the skills I learned in the J-School, along with my experiences at Mizzou.
