Degree and Year: BJ '55 Company: Chaikin Company Inc. Title: President City and State: Austin, Texas What do you do and what is most interesting about it? I am a real estate broker operating a full-service real estate brokerage in Austin, Texas. The majority of our business is property management, and the most interesting thing about it is the number and variety of people I get to meet while showing them property for rent. How did you get your first job? I got my first job by entering the Air Force approximately nine months after graduation. I had good jobs the first few years in the Air Force, and was offered a regular commission, which I accepted. That led to a 21-year career. What is the best professional lesson that you learned while at the J-School? The best professional lesson I learned at J-School was how to get along with other people. I also gained a great deal of self-confidence while at J-School. What advice do you have for current students? My advice to current students is to have fun and enjoy your college years, learn as much as you can about all facets of journalism and study hard. Mizzou is a place where it is often too easy to play than study, and while the playing is important, the knowledge and broad background you gain at J-School will serve you well all your life. What did you want to be as a kid? As a kid I wanted to be an Air Force pilot. I grew up during World War II, and there was a B-17 training base in my hometown. I watched the planes fly over my house, both individually and in formation and was truly awestruck. That is what I wanted to do most. Unfortunately, I did not make it through pilot training, but my Air Force career was still very rewarding, and I got an opportunity to travel the world.
