What was your first job? How did you get that job?
Copywriter for Famous-Barr. It helped that the person interviewing was also a graduate of MU J-School. That aside, I paid close attention to the details. There was a sort of "skills test" that I did very well on.

What advantages did a Missouri journalism degree give you?
Networking! As I said, my first boss (and her boss as well) were J-School grads. Also confidence. I had the utmost confidence that having been through the J-School rigors that I was prepared in the best possible way for what was ahead of me.

What is the most interesting thing you've done since graduation?
I threw caution to the wind and moved out of a safe, known environment in St. Louis to Waco, Texas. I was unsure that I would be able to find a job here that had anything to do with using my degree and talents. As it turns out, I did find something that has been very rewarding and has been a challenge and learning experience.

What advice would you give to current journalism students?
Don't blow anything off. Take your classes seriously and take the time to really learn the lessons available. The J-School offers many real-world types of experiences that can prepare you, but if you don't pay attention, the lesson is wasted.

What do you do with your free time?
I read and play with my 15-month old daughter.

What is the hardest part about your job?
Dealing with the politics that are inherent in the corporate world.

What, if anything, do you miss about Columbia or MU?
Lots of things! I miss the beauty of the campus. I miss Shakespeare's (although it is available online). I miss Rockbridge State Park.

What is your current job? What do you love about it? What is not so great?
I am the marketing director for a rural hospital. I love the variety each day brings. Since I'm a one-woman show, I wear many hats. One day might bring me orienting new hires about how they are arms of the marketing department. The next I might be organizing a day trip for seniors to a nearby attraction. I particularly love the days when I am creating ads, spots or collateral. I really don't like the politics.
