Degree and Year: BJ '84 Company: Park Labrea News/Beverly Press Title: Publisher/Owner City and State: Los Angeles, Calif. What do you do? And what is most interesting about it? I own and publish two weekly newspapers in the Mid-Wilshire, West Hollywood, Miracle Mile areas of Los Angeles. What I find most interesting about it is creating something every week that our readers look forward to for pertinent news and entertainment information that they won't get anywhere else. We scoop the LA Times on a weekly basis on local news. How did you get your job? After being hired by the Los Angeles Daily News out of J-School and working there for four years, my husband and I bought the then bi-weekly Park Labrea News. We mortgaged our house and just went for it. Nearly 15 years later, we have two newspapers, are publishing weekly, and have tripled the circulation. Best professional lesson learned at the J-School? You will use those editing skills everyday. What would be your best advice to current students? Learn to be flexible, adapt to your situation, and let employers know you are willing to work hard. I've seen too many college graduates who have a sense of entitlement just because they have a degree. A good journalist has to be willing to ask the difficult questions, and cover what their editors suggest. Learning these things early in your career will pay dividends. What are you working on currently? Next week's newspaper...and hopefully in the next year we will increase our circulation by another 30 percent. What are your next career steps? I will continue juggling my time between my business, my children and husband, volunteering at school and whatever else comes up. What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement? My greatest professional achievement is taking a huge risk after one year of marriage by going into business with my husband. We work together everyday, are successful newspaper publishers, have two beautiful children and a great marriage. I feel very fortunate to own my business, make my own schedule and earn enough money to enjoy my life to the fullest. What did you want to be as a kid? A movie star...
