Degree and Year: BJ '06 (Strategic Communication) Company: Dow Chemical Company Web Site: http://www.dow.com/ Title: Communications Specialist City and State: Midland, Mich.
I work for The Dow Chemical Company in the Public Affairs Development Program, an 18-month program with three rotations in different areas of Dow Public Affairs. The program is designed to train and groom leadership. How did you get your job? A contact from the Journalism School invited me to interview after a senior assessment. What advice do you have for current students? Internships, internships, internships. To become "rich and famous in the world of advertising," you need to prove that you're worth it. Always be performing at the level you want to be before you try to get it - so have three or four great experiences on your resume. And for Pete's sake, show some personality! You have less than 200 words to show them who you are and what you bring to the table that no one else does! They don't want to see technical skills; they want to see visionaries in the making. Good interviewing is like good media relations. You should have two or three key messages (your unique selling proposition) that you constantly bridge back to. Answer their question, but tell them what you want them to hear. What is your favorite J-School memory? My favorite memory has to be one of my class groups getting kicked out of the Walt-Willie (Walter Williams Hall) computer lab at midnight by a zealous IT guy. He yelled at us for Skittles and a small amount of well-contained caffeinated beverage. Seriously, don't take yourself that seriously. And, of course, the first-class education and on-the-job training. I have so many fond memories, but I think most of them require a strong sense of satire to appreciate.
