Degree and Year: BJ '65 Company: Chicago Sun-Times Company Web Site: http://www.suntimes.com/ Title: Sportswriter City and State: Chicago, Ill. What do you do? I'm in my 38th year on the sports staff of the Chicago Sun-Times. I've been the golf writer since 1972 and the soccer writer since 1984. My main role for the last seven seasons, however, has been covering the Chicago Blackhawks' hockey team. On the freelance side, I've been a columnist for Chicagoland Golf newspaper since 1989 and a regular contributor to Chicago District Golfer. How did you get your job? I was in grad school at Mizzou until January 1967, and then I joined the sports staff at the Hammond (Ind.) Times. The Chicago Sun-Times hired me in May 1969. What is the best professional lesson you learned at the J-School? The ability to handle deadline pressure. I've worked under very tight deadlines all my working life, but especially as a beat writer at the Sun-Times. What advice do you have for current students? Learn all phases of the newspaper business - not just writing, not just desk/layout - and be able to make full use of the Internet. What is your favorite J-School memory? Covering Missouri football games, especially those on the road at Oklahoma and Nebraska. Any last thoughts? I've been back on campus only three times since leaving for my first job in 1967. My education at Missouri served me well. I'm very proud to say I'm a graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism.
