What do you do?
I am the vice president of corporate communication for United Community Banks, Inc. in Blairsville, Ga. I am responsible for media relations, financial communication, investor relations and employee communication.

How did you get your job?
After taking an early retirement from a 26-year-career at Alcoa, Inc., I was referred to the bank by the Knoxville, Tenn., chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. I was recruited from the J-School for my "career" job at Alcoa, Inc.

What is the best professional lesson you learned at the J-School?
You must have a high-level view of the world, not just focused on your discipline or interest. Well-rounded education and experiences are critical to success.

What advice do you have for current students?
Money seems to drive everyone today. Chasing the dollar may lead to wealth but not necessarily happiness. Use your outstanding education and talent to do what you enjoy. The money - and your peace of mind - will follow.

What is your favorite J-School memory?
The friendship and memories formed through my involvement in the Magazine Club. We worked hard to represent our fellow magazine students, but we also had a great time. A close runner up: the hours spent in the Old Heidelberg.
