Title: Asst. Account Manager
City and State: Kansas City, Mo.

What do you do?
I am an assistant account manager in a large advertising agency. I participate in brainstorming sessions, attend client meetings, coordinate events, and assist the account managers with their daily duties. I also assist in the planning of everything from small trade show booths to national conferences.

How did you get your job?
I got my job through Mizzou contacts. I was already working for a large software company here in Kansas City, when I got an e-mail from Jennifer Wilford (former Career Center director). She informed me of the opening, I sent my resume, and within a few days, I had the job. Had it not been for my MU connection, I never would have known about this position.

Best professional lesson learned at the J-School?
Proofread everything. It's amazing how often I see mistakes in communication with clients and potential employees. It displays such a lack of professionalism.

What would be your best advice to current students?
Get a good internship. It doesn't even matter if it involves your ultimate career choice. I did one of my summer stints in the creative department of a PR agency in New York. I had no desire to do PR or creative, but I was able to learn so much about how to present concepts to clients, professionalism and the general workings of an agency. It looked great on my resume and is always a good conversation piece.

What is one thing you wish you had done?
I wish I had stayed in school longer. There are so many classes I wish I could have taken that I just assumed I didn't have time for if I was going to get out in four years. I wish I hadn't been in such a hurry, because once you start working, you'll be working until retirement.
