What do you do?
I run a marketing communications consulting firm (publishing consulting/media relations/corporate writing/journalism). I'm the only full-time staff, and I bring in other resources when needed. I do everything related to running the business, using outside resources for accounting/financial, legal, tech, etc. Working with clients, I do strategy, some execution (writing); I bring in designers, publicists and others depending on client needs.

How did you get your job?
I started my own company after 25 years as a writer and editor with Advertising Age.

Describe some of the projects you handle.
I handle media relations for ICOM Global Advertising Agency Network and others sporadically. I have completed an annual report and sustainability report with Colgate-Palmolive in addition to working on custom published sections with Advertising Age.

What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement?
Some achievements include reporting and breaking news on the introduction of Diet Coke, "New Coke," Tylenol poisonings, a federal government sting of a couponing scam; plus setting up a network of international correspondents in Eastern Europe and supervising editorial coverage during the fall of the Berlin wall and economic and social changes throughout the region. I also authored a book, "Moscow Meets Madison Avenue: The Adventures of the First American Adman in the U.S.S.R.," published by Harper Collins. Then after so many years as a business news journalist, acquiring and retaining clients for my own firm was an exciting achievement.

What makes you good at your job?
Honest and open communication with clients; listening to what clients need; giving them good ideas and following through to make sure things happen.

What is one thing you wish you had done?
I wish I would have realized earlier that I was interested in and could have been good at more visual arts/graphic design; I could have become an architect or landscape designer.
