Nancy Newton BJ '96

What do you do?
I'm an account supervisor at a mid-size public relations firm (approximately 20 employees). I oversee a national education account, which is University of Phoenix. My responsibilities include: strategic planning, media relations, crisis/issues management, internal communications, relationship building by forming networks of third-party advocates, public affairs, speech writing, event planning, and copywriting for advertising, Web sites and marketing collateral.

What was the best professional lesson you learned at the J-School?
You're replaceable. Networking is important and can lead to opportunities you won't find on your own. Hard work pays off in the end. The skills learned at J-School are applicable to many different jobs.

What would be your best advice to current students?
Know the Associated Press Stylebook backwards and forwards. Get as much experience as you can even if it means working for free. Find mentors. You're never too young to do anything as long as you're qualified. Quality of life is important; remember to treasure your family and friends outside of work.

What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement?
Producing TV news in my mid-20s in DMA 34. I am always prepared for the unexpected and view unfortunate circumstances as opportunities for career advancement. For example, I was laid-off due to a restructuring announcement, and another employer closed due to bankruptcy. In both cases, I landed promotions due to the necessary yet abrupt job transitions.

What makes you good at your work?
The ability to multi-task, be flexible, work independently and keep a good attitude despite the circumstances.

What did you want to be as a kid?
A TV news producer.

What is something about you that might surprise people?
My dogs, a Maltese and Bichon Frise, are like my kids. If I am not at work, I am probably taking Rudy and Riley to the dog park.
