Name: Patrick Kessler
Degree and Year: MA '00
Company: Media Bureau Patrick Kessler
Company Web Site: http://www.patrickmkessler.de/
Title: Founder and Owner
City and State: Munich, Germany

Describe your agency or place of employment.
My media bureau offers various types of media services and translation for the corporate sector as well as public-sector clients, basically everything from journalistic writing, PR and creating Web sites for corporations. I focus particularly on the IT and tech sector, Munich is a hub for these industries. All services are offered in German and English.

What do your responsibilities?
I head and run the bureau, which I founded in 2002. I deal directly with all key accounts, work for them, acquire new contracts etc., I do basically all operations pertaining to the business.

How did you get your job?
I founded this company, so I created this job myself, so to speak.

Best professional lesson learned at J-School?
Not really one specific thing; the entire experience there was one big lesson that I greatly benefited from and enjoyed immensely.

What is your favorite J-School memory?
My friends there, Columbia, MU, the J-School, the professors - again, the whole experience was amazing, and I always like to think back.

What would be your best advice to current students?
Listen to your professors because they are exceptional at what they do and will prepare you for the real world of journalism better than anyone else can.

What are you working on currently?
I am working on various projects for my key accounts. There is rarely a shortage of work these days.

What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement?
Building this bureau from scratch in a very daunting market environment here in Germany.

What makes you good at your job?
Dedication, hard work, and the fact that I am native speaker of German and English comes in handy.

Who would you like to work with and why; or where would you most like to work?
I am always open to new challenges and meeting new people and business partners. Right now, I would mainly be interested in expanding my business, moving into new branches with partners.

What are your next career steps?
Expand the current business, possibly launching a new business endeavor with some U.S. partners.

What skill would you most like to have?
Probably a third language at native-speaker level.
