Degree and Year: BJ '76 (Magazine) Company: Baylor University Company Web Site: http://www.baylor.edu/ Title: Editor, Baylor Magazine City and State: Waco, Texas
I'm editor of a bimonthly publication for Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Baylor Magazine is a 48-page, full-color publication that is mailed to 100,000 alumni, students, parents and peer institutions. How did you get your job? I began at Baylor five years ago as assistant director of publications and was promoted to the editor position. Best professional lesson learned at the J-School? From Tom Duffy: "I can't fill a newspaper with excuses." What would be your best advice to current students? Conduct yourself with integrity at all times; be accurate rather than first; be balanced in your reporting; always treat a person's story with respect. What is one thing you wish you had done? "Success" is too vague a word for me, but I'm happy in what I do because I bring the best I have in me to it and I believe that what I'm doing is important and makes a difference.
