What do you do?
I'm the investigative reporter for WTVG, the ABC affiliate in Toledo, Ohio.

How did you get your job?
I was at the 2005 RTNDA convention in Las Vegas. On the first morning I bumped into my boss-to-be, Brian Trauring. It took him four days to look at my tape, and I thought I didn't have a chance. I owe much thanks to Stacey Woelfel and Jen Reeves who subtly encouraged Brian to give me a chance.

What is the best professional lesson you learned at the J-School?
I credit this one to Phill Brooks: “This isn't an oldscast, it's a newscast. Find the ‘news’ in the story.” The truth is there are too many to mention. I believe the J-School does a great job of teaching you to master the basics. The fundamentals of this craft need to be your nature. They need to be what you do without thinking. When it comes down to crunch, this foundation is what enables you to deliver.

What advice do you have for current students?
Work hard. Volunteer to do anything. Every opportunity possesses a lesson. Have fun. If you're not having fun, find your passion. Treat people well; it will always pay off in the end.

What is your favorite J-School memory?
I'll always remember my first live shot at KOMU. Ugly would be an understatement.

Last thoughts?
I believe coming to the J-School was the best decision I ever made. We should all be thankful to be a part of the finest institution in the country. Many thanks to all of the people who make this wonderful school what it is.
