The Missouri School of Journalism is a leader in journalism education and research. The School awarded the nation's first doctor of philosophy in journalism degree in 1934. Since then, Missouri graduates are represented in colleges and universities around the world, serving as deans, chairs and professors. Ph.D. graduates of recent years are now on the faculties of Kansas and Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, Iowa, Nebraska, Louisiana State, Mississippi and other accredited journalism programs.

Doctoral Program
Doctoral Models

Beyond teaching and administration, our Ph.D. graduates are adding value to corporations, media entities, strategic communication firms and other organizations because they understand research and management theories.

With more than 80 faculty members in every area of journalism, mass communication and strategic communication, you will find a rich intellectual environment. Your doctoral student peers will be some of the most prolific producers of research in the field, as witnessed by our top performances at the annual meeting of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

You will have time to spend on your scholarship because our doctoral students receive full support for six semesters of study. We provide research and travel support so you can present at professional meetings and other prestigious conferences.

Only Missouri Journalism offers a comprehensive set of real-media experiences, allowing you to connect theory, research and practice in a real-world setting. We operate the only commercial research television station in the country used to train journalism students. We publish a community newspaper, four major Web sites, a local magazine and an international magazine.

Our off-site programs in Washington, D.C. and New York allow you to carry out your research in the field. Our broad array of international programs provides opportunities for you to partner with educational programs from South Africa to Europe and to collaborate with other prominent researchers.

After reviewing the information about the doctoral program on this Web site, we hope that you will want to visit campus, to see firsthand how Missouri can help you attain your career goals. We look forward to hearing from you.
