Columbia, Mo. (Oct. 21, 2004) -- A new brochure about the Five-Year Bachelor's/Master's Program at the Missouri School of Journalism is now available online and in print. The program allows a student to earn a master's degree in just 12 months after the completion of the Bachelor of Journalism degree.

"The Five-Year Bachelor's/Master's Program provides a unique opportunity for students to learn more, earn more and end up with two degrees from the world's first School of Journalism," said Esther Thorson, associate dean of graduate studies and research.

The new brochure outlines information about the program, including:

  • The long-term career advantages of having a master's degree.
  • The benefits of completing a master's degree in one year instead of the traditional two years.
  • Sample curriculum and schedule of courses.
  • The areas of concentration available.
  • Admission requirements and guidelines.

"The skills that I learned during this additional year at the Journalism School helped me make a smooth transition into the work world and put me ahead of other job candidates who were my age," noted Anne Richter Kuhl, BJ '01, MA '02. Kuhl now serves as public relations coordinator for the Heartland Lions Eye Bank in St. Louis.

Amber Taufen, a current five-year program student, decided to enter the program after visiting with faculty members and journalism advisors. "The opportunity to finish in one year instead of two was very appealing," said Amber Taufen, BJ '03. "This program is ideal for people who know they want to go to graduate school."

A copy of the Five-Year Program brochure can be downloaded from the Missouri Journalism Web site (above, right) or by contacting the Missouri School of Journalism at .
