Jan. 10, 2005: Kristen Hare Wins Sifford Prize for Journalism Kristen Hare of the St. Joseph (Mo.) News-Press is the latest winner of the Darrell Sifford Memorial Prize in Journalism. She is the youngest winner (26 years old) ever in the 10-year-old contest and is from the smallest newspaper (circ. 39,500) ever to boast a winner in the annual writing contest. Hare, BJ '00, is a native of Springfield, Mo., and earned a bachelor's degree with an emphasis in magazine journalism from the Missouri School of Journalism. [More]

Jan. 17, 2005: Upcoming Hurley Symposium to Address Issue of Citing Anonymous Sources The Fifth Annual Curtis B. Hurley Symposium will be held at 9 a.m., Thursday, March 17 at the National Press Club, 14th and F Street NW, Washington, D.C. At this meeting, a coalition of organizations will gather to discuss access to government information on the record, with an intent to craft steps toward a solution to the increasing reliance on anonymous sources and off-the-record briefings. Jan. 18, 2005: Missouri Association of Publications Publishing Summit to Be Held March 3-4 The Missouri Association of Publications (MAP) will hold its first Publishing Summit at the University of Missouri campus in Columbia on March 3 and 4. The new association, founded by J-School faculty member Don Ranly, along with 18 other board members representing the publishing industry in and about Missouri, seeks to provide continuing education opportunities for its members by means of seminars, workshops and roundtables where members may share expertise and resources and network with one another. Jan. 24, 2005: MU Students Tour European Media Thirty students from the School of Journalism spent two weeks in early Jan. touring European media operations and in the process visited Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt and Vienna. This was the second year the School has sponsored a European Media Study Tour, an idea conceived by Brian S. Brooks, associate dean for undergraduate studies and administration. [More]

Jan. 28, 2005: Alumnus Bequeaths $2.5 Million Gift to Advertising Department The Missouri School of Journalism has received an estimated $2.5 million gift from the estate of Paul Synor, BJ '42. The monies will be used to enhance strategic communication studies in the Advertising Department. Mr. Synor spent most of his life working in the creative department for advertising agencies in New York, Chicago, Toronto and London, including Leo Burnett in Chicago, the advertising agency responsible for creating Tony the Tiger, the Pillsbury Doughboy, Morris the Cat, Charlie the Tuna, the Marlboro Man and other brand icons. Jan. 31, 2005: Gloria Steinem to Receive Missouri Honor Medal on Feb. 10 Gloria Steinem, a writer and an activist, will be awarded a 2004 Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism in a special ceremony beginning at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 10, at the Missouri Theatre. The Missouri School of Journalism has awarded the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism annually since 1930. More than 425 distinguished journalists, advertising and public relations practitioners, business people, institutions and media organizations have received this prestigious award. [More]
