Students select the 10 faculty members, advisers and academic administrators who have made significant contributions to the out-of-class learning experiences for MU students for the award each year. The award celebrates how critical these experiences are to the learning and success of students.

Woelfel's commitment to student learning and personal development made him an excellent choice, according to Kent Collins, head of the Radio-Television Journalism faculty.

"Stacey is excellent in education in far more ways than educators and the public generally understand. He is excellent in the classroom, in the highly complex commercial KOMU (NBC) television lab, and in the professional world. On a daily - no, an hourly basis, he is involved with our youngest students in classroom and lab, he is actually teaching viewers of KOMU-TV about television journalism, and he is advising mid-career alums with their professional growth," said Collins.

Woelfel joined the journalism faculty in 1986. Under his leadership, the newsroom has evolved into digital news-gathering, picking up numerous awards along the way including national and regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and a Payne Award for Ethics in Journalism.

Past recipients of the award at the Missouri School of Journalism include Brian Brooks, associate dean for undergraduate studies and administration, in 2004, and Charles Davis, an associate professor, in 2003.
