Publishing Summit to Offer Professional and Educational Opportunities

Columbia, Mo. (Feb. 6, 2007) -- What do a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, the CEO of a publishing giant and Columbia's 2006 Citizen of the Year have in common? They're among the star-studded lineup of speakers at the 2007 Publishing Summit sponsored by the Missouri Association of Publications (MAP) March 1-2 at Memorial Union on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus.

From grammar reviews, to photography sessions, to the announcement of the Ranly Award winners of MAP's first-ever competition, the MAP Summit offers an information-packed schedule with sessions on writing and editing, design and visuals, and publishing and management. The Ranlys, named after Missouri School of Journalism Professor Emeritus and MAP Founder Don Ranly, will honor excellence in quality print and electronic publications.

Pulitzer Prize-winner Jacqui Banaszynski, the Knight Chair in Editing at the School, will deliver the keynote speech, "Get on Your Knees and Dance: The Enduring Power of Storytelling."

Cameron Bishop, BJ '76, chief executive officer of Ascend Media in Overland Park, Kan., will explain how to treat your publication as a brand. Larry Lannon, who works in Ascend Media's Chicago office, will share how to build your business online.

Fred Parry, Columbia's Citizen of the Year and owner/publisher of Inside Columbia magazine, will lead the publisher's roundtable, which is designed to generate 101 revenue-building ideas.

In addition to the many educational and professional development sessions, the MAP Summit offers participants a chance to network with industry professionals from around the region and to view exhibits from various organizations representing all facets of publishing.

"Attendees will have a hard time deciding which sessions to attend since there are so many strong ones, led by knowledgeable, very experienced speakers," says John Fennell, associate professor of magazine journalism. "This year's summit is the one professional retreat you won't want to miss."

Early-bird registration is $125 for members, $175 for non-members; the deadline is Feb. 16. After that, registration will be $175 for members and $225 for non-members.
