Senior Wins $5,000 Newhouse Foundation Scholarship from NABJ

Columbia, Mo. (Sept. 5, 2007) -- Jamille Fields, a Missouri School of Journalism senior from St. Louis, was one of five recipients of a $5,000 Newhouse Foundation Scholarship awarded by the National Association of Black Journalists.

The Newhouse Foundation Scholarship honors talented African-American students majoring in print journalism. Fields, a magazine journalism major and business administration minor, was recognized as a scholarship winner at the 2007 NABJ convention held in Las Vegas in August. She has been an NABJ member since her freshman year and will use the award to help finance her senior year at MU.

"With college becoming even more difficult to afford, we are proud to offer these students a jump-start on their education," said NABJ President Bryan Monroe, vice president and editorial director of Ebony and Jet magazines in Chicago.

Fields is interning this fall for the Congressional Black Caucus and Sen. Barack Obama as part of the School's Washington Program, which gives students a chance to earn academic credit as they experience the fast-paced professional environment in Washington, D.C., first hand. The Congressional Black Caucus is funding her housing and travel expenses for the internship. Fields previously has interned in communications for Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan and in public relations for the Catholic Charities of St. Louis. She also has worked for Vox, the weekly arts and culture magazine published by the Columbia Missourian. The Missourian is the School's student-staffed, faculty-led newspaper used as a training lab for journalism students.

An advocacy group established in 1975 in Washington, D.C., NABJ is the largest organization of journalists of color in the nation, with nearly 4,000 members. It provides educational opportunities, career development and support to black journalists worldwide.

April 16, 2007: Journalism Master's Student Wins Prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to Germany Robin Hoecker, a master's student at the Missouri School of Journalism, has received one of five Fulbright Beginning Professional Journalism Awards to Germany, the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board announced recently. During her 10-month Fulbright program, Hoecker, from Monroeville, Pa., will study how photojournalism and citizen journalism can be used to promote dialogue among ethnic groups in Germany. [More]

April 2, 2007: Missouri Journalism Senior Wins National American Advertising Federation Internship Senior Katie Roehrick, a strategic communication major from Kansas City, Mo., received a 2007 Vance and Betty Lee Stickell Internship in advertising. Roehrick will spend 10 weeks working in the advertising department of The Los Angeles Times. In addition, she will receive $1,500 in May to help cover moving and living expenses and a $4,000 salary over the course of the internship. [More]

March 14, 2007: Journalism Doctoral Student Wins Competitive $15,000 International Scholarship Tayo Oyedeji has been named a prestigious Harvey Fellow by the Mustard Seed Foundation based in Arlington, Va. The Foundation is a Christian organization that encourages graduate students in premier educational and research programs to pursue leadership positions in strategic fields where Christians tend to be under-represented. Jan. 31, 2007: Ace Copy Editor Wins National Scholarship The American Copy Editors Society recently named Missouri School of Journalism senior Krysten Chambrot a winner in the organization's annual national scholarship competition. Chambrot, a newspaper journalism major from Miramar, Fla., is one of four students in the United States to receive a $1,000 scholarship from ACES this year. A panel of professional copy editors selected the winners based on commitment to copy editing as a career, work experience in copy editing and copy-editing ability. [More]

Aug. 31, 2006: Senior Wins $2,000 C.W. Gusewelle Journalism Scholarship Megan Rolland, a senior newspaper journalism and political science double major from Grand Junction, Colo., has won the 2006 C.W. Gusewelle Journalism Scholarship. The $2,000 scholarship, now in its second year, is awarded to an outstanding student in his or her final year of undergraduate or graduate study in print or broadcast journalism. [More]

June 29, 2006: Media Convergence Student Wins a $10,000 Scripps Howard Top Ten Scholarship Matt Sokoloff is one of only 10 college students in the U.S. to receive a $10,000 Top Ten Scholarship awarded by the Scripps Howard Foundation in 2006.
