Mexico (Guadalajara) Summer Cross-Cultural Program

Spend the summer in Mexico! Experience Mexican culture and life firsthand during this four-week program in Guadalajara, Mexico. This program offers you Cross-Cultural Journalism (J2000) in a cross-cultural setting, learning and interacting with native students on campus. In addition, a Mexican Culture & History course (three credits) enhances your experience by expanding your cultural knowledge of the native country. Further embrace traditions and local living through numerous exciting program and media excursions.
Classes are taught in English. Program Dates: Approximately late May through July 1.
Host Institution: Tecnológico de Monterrey
The Tec de Monterrey system boasts 33 campuses throughout the Mexican Republic with more than 85,000 students. The Guadalajara campus is one of the system's newest facilities. It features a state of the art library and outstanding recreational facilities including basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, and an Olympic-size pool, all available to students.
Area
Affectionately referred to as "The Pearl of the West" by natives of Mexico's second largest city, Guadalajara is located in the west-central part of the country in the state of Jalisco. The city is home to three million people and sits on a high plateau more than 5,000 feet above sea level. The heart of Guadalajara remains a colonial city decorated with beautiful, ancient buildings and quintessential examples of the Mexican mosaic. Guadalajara also offers a wide variety of entertainment; cultural and sporting events abound, as well as a vibrant night life.
Eligibility
Students must be eligible to take J2000. You must have successfully completed J1100 and have at least a 2.8 GPA. All students must be in good academic standing.
Course Credit
You will earn six credit hours on this program; JOURN 2000 (three credits) and Mexican History & Culture (three credits upper-level Humanities or Social Science).
The JOURN 2000 course will be taught by an MU faculty member and will incorporate the Mexican perspective on media and stereotypes while learning the importance of your audience and sensitivity to all cultures in the profession of journalism. In addition, the Mexican History & Culture course will be taught by a Mexican instructor covering a different topic each week. Gain a better understanding for how Mexican came about and the origins of its people through course-related fieldtrips and excursions. This course will earn you three credits of upper-level Humanities or Social Science credit.
Costs
MU attempts to make the costs of studying abroad affordable for you. Generally, study abroad experiences cost a bit more than credits taken on-campus at MU, but include new experiences, cultures, languages, and often times housing, flight costs, and other program related costs. It's highly recommended that you outline a budget for yourself of what you would spend during the summer here at MU and compare it to study abroad costs.
This program fee is approximately $2,250 (including the MU Study Abroad fee) plus MU educational fees (six credits). Additional expenses to consider for this program may include personal entertainment, transportation, insurance, and other miscellaneous expenses. Program fee includes round-trip flight St. Louis to Guadalajara, host-family stay and meals, program excursions and related transportation, media outlet visits, on-site assistance, MU administrative fee, and ISIC card.
Please note that there are scholarships and other financial options available to you to help make study abroad part of your college experience!
Financial Aid
The financial aid you normally receive for your classes at MU is usually applicable. Additional grants, loans or scholarships may be available to offset the extra costs of studying abroad. Please meet with the advisor for study abroad financing at the MU Financial Aid Office (11 Jesse Hall) for more complete information: 573-882-7506.
The School of Journalism offers need-based travel scholarships each semester. Applications are available on our Web site. You can also apply for additional scholarships through the MU International Center (Memorial Union). Watch our Web site for special program scholarship announcements each semester.
Housing
Students will experience Mexican life further by staying with a host family. You and another student on the program will be house together and will come to know the culture better by visiting and enjoying authentic meals with your family. Make real connections and friendships for life!
How to Apply
It is recommended that all applicants meet with the Journalism Study Abroad Advisor prior to applying if they have questions or concerns. Please submit the following application materials in a manila envelope to the Journalism Study Abroad Coordinator, 76 Gannett by the posted deadline. Remember to sign-up for an interview time when you drop off your application! For this program you will need:
